History

H.I. Construction Ltd. has operated an asphalt production facility and road building operation in West Prince County, Prince Edward Island since 1958. H.I. Construction Ltd. derives its name from the amalgamation of Hayes Paving and Island Excavators which took place in 1985. Later that same year the Island Excavators portion of the company was sold leaving only the paving operation located in West Prince County.

The company has employed hundreds of people during its operation and now presently employs eight to ten people year round and another thirty to forty during the operating season of May to October.

Family Owned And Operated- Barry and Scott Dawson

H.I. Construction Ltd. is a family owned and operated business. Barry Dawson is President and Scott Dawson, his son, is general manager. Over the years the company has employed more than one generation of the same family and this history of family ties continues today.

Business Sources

H.I.'s primary source of revenue is derived from roadway construction and paving which is secured annually through the open tendering process of the P.E.I. Department of Transportation & Public Works. In addition to work for the P.E.I. Dept. of Transportation & Public Works, H.I. Construction Ltd. is also involved in private sector construction such as private driveways, construction site development, subdivision ventures and aggregate sales. Their head office is located in Alma, West Prince, PEI.

Innovative Construction Practices

The company has installed a small windmill. H.I. Construction continues to look at innovative ways to produce services and minimize their imprint on the environment.
