Driveway Paving Details - PEI

We operate the only APPROVED, Prince Edward Island Dept. of Transportation (P.E.I.D.O.T.) asphalt plant west of Summerside. Asphalt driveways are constructed using P.E.I.D.O.T. inspected and approved materials and equipment. Course aggregate or gravel is used to provide strength; sand is used to bind and fill in between the larger gravel; and liquid asphalt is the tar which glues the gravel and sand together and which gives the mixture its black color.

These materials are fed in precise proportions into our asphalt plant to produce the type of asphalt concrete mix we require for a specific job. For private work, in order to provide as fine a top-finish as is possible, yet still provide the gravel in the asphalt mix to provide strength we have modified a D.O.T. highway mix which we refer to as our Driveway Mix. On private jobs, due to the confided space, irregular layout, and need for some hand-work there may be areas which appear coarse. This does not affect the strength of the driveway. Though regular use and over time these areas will become less noticeable. The Driveway Mix provides strength and a inner finish that D.O.T. seal mixes. But to provide a very closed and find finish to your driveway we recommend placing a second-seal on top of your asphalt driveway in the second or third year after initial paving. This product is made of sand and liquid and asphalt and is laid in the thickness no greater than one inch.

Asphalt pavement is not concrete. It is a pliable material which is designed to react o stresses from above (vehicles) and below (frost). It will rise and fall if required and if care is taken during the spring season and with heavy vehicle traffic it will withstand many ears of used. The blackness of asphalt pavement attracts a greater amount of heat from the sun. This may cause the asphalt surface to become tender especially during the first and second years after construction. Vehicles tires when turned in place can cause surface scratching of the pavement and if allowed to sit on the asphalt on a hot day may leave very small indent on the surface.
